Freebird : Classic Rock Covers

Freebird started out in May 2003 as an outlet for four guys to play the music they loved.

Offering a powerful combination of serious musicianship and a fabulous stage show with amazing sound and lights, it is little wonder that the band play upwards of 60 – 70 gigs a year.

All of this would mean little without the songs to back it up – and what a selection it is. Covering the entire Classic Rock output of the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s, any given night might see the band rip it up with “Won’t Get Fooled Again” by the Who, “Bad Medicine” by Bon Jovi, “Foxy Lady” by Jimi Hendrix, “Long Live Rock & Roll” by Rainbow, “Enter Sandman” by Metallica, “Here I Go Again” by Whitesnake and many more from a set of over 100 songs. Purplewire play a variety of modern and classic rock and pop covers, ranging from Roy Orbison to the Killers, from Jimi Hendrix to Lily Allen.

We started off getting together for a bit of fun, and have a mixture of experienced musicians and those not so experienced.

We soon found ourselves gigging, and most of our gigs since then have come via recommendation and word of mouth. We’re still in it for the fun, and enjoy putting our own take on old and modern classics.

Silbury Hill

David Stainer and Scott Dolling have fused an original style of acoustic based rock music in their band Silbury Hill. Playing together since 2008 on an ad hoc basis the two have ‘traded’ as Silbury Hill after coming across the name by chance after discounting many other ideas.

The band’s material is based around an original take on familiar (and some unfamiliar) numbers mixed with a healthy spread of homegrown tunes.  Drawing influence from selected prog rock bands of the 70s yet playing in mostly folk and acoustic settings means the two are rarely covering tracks heard by most on the circuit, and even when they do it usually has a different feel.

Waxies Dargle

Formed in early 2009 Waxies Dargle have grown into a seven piece folk/rock band playing not only our heroes The Pogues’ songs but a variety of Celtic classics.

Our style is upbeat and thoroughly danceable with a few “cry in ya beer” traditional folk weepies for the sentimental ones amongst you.

The set includes classics such as Wild rover, Dirty old town, Fairytale of New York, Irish rover etc. so you know you’ll be singing along in no time.

Playing in the local (Suffolk) area to start with, we take in parties, pubs, clubs and festivals. Stretching our wings of late further afield where our infectious brand of folk music has been received with much enthusiasm.

The line up is an impressive mix of musicians playing authentic folk instruments including banjo, mandolin, Irish bouzouki, accordion etc. Influences include The Pogues, The Clash, Gogol Bordello plus a variety of pop, rock, classical and punk.
