 Butterfly

Progressive three piece ‘Butterfly’ is where the wired broadband generation meets the psychedelia, rebelliousness and strong community ethos of the 60s Hippy movement. The current band grew out of an older project named Hobomolobo, which in turn emerged from a series of informal jams at various house parties during 2005. The line up of the band fluctuated wildly until the arrival of prodigious drummer Kris Last cemented the roll call, joining founding members Chris Hollands (Bass) and Tommy T (Vocals, Guitar) to create an eclectic guitar driven sound influenced as much by Hawkwind as Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd.

The trio immediately went on to launch the phenomenally successful night Ultrazang at McGinty’s pub where they invited the most talented local bands to play with them, bringing all the fun of the circus to the sleepy Suffolk town of Ipswich. After two years of hard gigging and refining their sound and theatrical stage presence, the band pressed the novelty album Nuclear Boobies, before deciding they were now experienced enough to scale to more ambitious heights.

Their metamorphosis into Butterfly sees the band composing more mature lyrics to more complex music, incorporating synths for the first time; fusing their love of the old psychedelic masters with the left field vibe of alternative bands such as Flaming Lips. Now their mission is nothing less than to cut through meaningless pop culture to unify people through music, and it’s clear they are destined for great things.

Derider

Band of the month in Ipswich24 magazine (Dec 2011).

A combination of rock n’ roll groove, punk rock energy, and a striking sense of melody and subtlety informs the output of this explosive quintet.

Bursting through the seams of Brighton, this explosive five-piece have been relentlessly hitch-hiking across stages (including Brighton’s Concorde 2 and Ipswich Music Day’s Evening Star Stage in summer 2011), brushing arms with the likes of Cerebral Ballzy and Abdoujaparov (Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine) and earning themselves slots on prestigious festivals.  The band have just finished recording their debut single “Favourite Mistake” engineered by Forbes Coleman (Stereophonics, Clare Maguire).  The song is inspired by UK Bestselling Author Jane Fallon’s Got You Back.  Having agreed to endorse the band Jane says she “absolutely loves the band’s fresh sound, really energetic, really engaging – the offspring of Dramarama and Foo Fighters”.  The single is set to hit the shops on the 5th March 2012 followed by a music video and UK tour.

Hello I’m DJ Kippling (also known as kippers or kemp(y)), I’m male, and from Ipswich in Suffolk.  I would say I’ve been making music for about 5 or 6 years now, only really starting to produce seriously in the last couple of years or so.

My style of music varies form song to song but if I had to describe it I’d say it was electro, house, club bangers. Or something like that.

2011 saw the boys play 75 shows, including an East Anglian tour, climaxing with a storming set at Norwich Arts Centre; several high profile summer festival slots in the region including Ipswich Music Day and Halesworth Gig In The Park; and a 9 date UK tour in October, the highlight of which was a rammed Notting Hill Arts Club!

Gay Keyring

Gay Keyring was born from the idea that 2 kids with no rhythm from the countryside could make better hip-hop music than L’il Jon & better dance music than Hot Chip. So, in-between day jobs & girlfriends they concocted a deadly medley of “Alternative Post-Euphoric Trip-Hop” tracks that took it to the window & the wall.

Taking in a variety of influences, they skip across genre from the chilled out ambience of Boards Of Canada to the raw hip-hop of MF Doom, they worked their little hearts out & arrived at a place tastier than heaven, now they’re ready for the floor.

Jonathan Marriott

My name is Johnny.  I am currently based in Suffolk, but love to travel all over the place playing music to lovely people.  I don’t really care about ‘scenes’ or fads.

I play raw acoustic rock, which is heavily influenced by punk music, yet sounds very little like it. Come to a show and you’ll understand.

Watch my videos, listen to my songs and if you enjoy what you hear please drop me a line, especially if you have a show you would like me to play!

Kaleidofly

Kaleidofly were born out of a friendship that originated in Portsmouth between Logan (Drums) and Bobby(Guitar): these two talented individuals studied and lived together for a year. After months of playing together they parted ways, reluctantly returning to their hometowns, but still continued to play music.

Bobby and friend Rachel (Vocals), both share a love of the same music, and played together in Logan’s absence. After writing their first song (Steady) together, they got it recorded, sent it through the internet to Logan. Logan laid a beat and sent it back to them: a stream of other songs were to be made in this way.  Soon after, they were joined by Bobby’s brother Sam(Guitar) and friend Chris(Bass). When they first all played together, it was like they had been doing so all their lives and they felt a spark in what they were playing. Now they are making it their mission to spread this music magic to others across the lands.

This is now currently available. 2011 has seen the band play with the likes of BONDED BY BLOOD, LAZARUS AD, ADRENICIDE, ANTERIOR & SNAKEBITE and an exciting ‘cup run’ in the Metal To The Masses BLOODSTOCK competition. The aim of the band has always been to go out and make an enjoyable racket in the vein of bands like EXODUS, VIO-LENCE and OVERKILL with no interest in trends and commerciality. Steve O’Neil

As a teenager Steve listened to Cold play and Oasis. Noel Gallagher and Chris Martin’s writing ignited a whole new world for Steve as he began to play the keyboard and write his own material.

February 2009 Steve went into Purple Studios, Norwich to record his first EP titled ‘All in Good Time’. This was a four track CD full of heart and emotion that packed a punch and heavily contributed to an eventful 2010.

Entering Star Radio competition for local under the radar talent and winning was a huge boost, taking the writing up to a new level, often compared to the great Damien rice.

December 2010 Steve entered another competition with Star radio, ‘The Hub Factor’. Listeners had to vote for their favourite track and artist. Christmas eve Steve received a telephone call to say he had won. It was his best present, being recognized for his own music and people loving what they had heard.  The prize was a day in Hub Studios recording his own material on CD.

Steve continues to push his talent as a writer and performer, eager to go out to perform to people and venues across the UK

The Banzai Kid

“It’s not the way I planned”

The Banzai Kid started out making stupid songs on a little tape recorder with his brother and his friends and eventually as he got older felt the urge to actually form a proper band.

Every single band that he formed fell apart and along the way he found himself trying to keep creative by experimenting with sounds on his computer.  This was the first stage of the Banzai Kid.

Eventually, frustrated at his latest bands collapse, he realised that the only real answer was to be a solo artist instead and just “see what happens”.

He has since written many songs and performed them live on open mic nights, gigs and radio shows.

The Onion Band

Legendary Folk Rockers The Onion Band formed in 1983 and have spent nearly 30 years perfecting the unique brand of music they call “Pub Folk”.

They are not your stereotypical “finger in the ear” folkies. “We have played rock pubs, country pubs, city pubs & working men’s clubs. We wouldn’t have lasted five minutes if we sang thirty verses about dead fishermen”, they say.

  • This is folk music for people who don’t like folk music.

The band members despair of the way folk music is usually performed. The only emotion ever conveyed is a pathetic self-pity. This music was the rock music of its day! The Onion Band launch themselves into songs full of passion, anger, love and humour. They play dance tunes in a way that actually makes you want to dance. Their broad repertoire of traditional and contemporary material is designed to entertain, not impress. Their live presence has become that of a rock band. They cite influences as diverse as Bob Roberts, New Model Army, Oysterband and Dick Gaughan. Their combination of instruments is unique; it shouldn’t work, but it does – magnificently. They play with confidence born of nearly 30 years gigging. They are absolute masters of what they do.

The Onion Band are also available for private parties and functions.

The Proposition

The Proposition’s sound is described as a uniquely English take on acoustic-Americana, offering instantly hummable modern folk songs that explore dark stories through the prettiest of tunes, and all driven by stirringly energetic performance.

Built around acoustic guitars, banjo, bass, electric slide, drums, and organ, with rich three-part harmonies, The Proposition have been likened to The Handsome Family, The Felice Brothers and The Avett Brothers, but remain uniquely their own ‘proposition’.

A four-star review in Maverick magazine praised the band’s “Memorable melodies, powerful vocals and cleverly written lyrics.”

R2 magazine described them as “authentic old-timey Americana alongside roughly hewn melody-rich acoustic roots”.

With instantly engaging but memorable songwriting and a charismatic approach to performance, you won’t want to miss The Proposition.

The Sustained

The Sustained were formed in Ipswich in 1981, and went on to support the likes of The Adicts, UK Subs and 13th Chime at venues up and down the country including the now legendary 100Club in London.

After a break of over a quarter century, they decided to get back together.

Their first gig in 27 years was in March 2011 at the Regent Theatre Circle Lounge, and was in aid of Papyrus, a national charity dedicated to the prevention of suicide and the promotion of positive mental health and emotional wellbeing in young people.

Although they say the gig was a “one off” it might not take much to tempt them back out of their respective hidey-holes to play again.

The current (almost original) line-up includes ex-members of Extreme Noise Terror, Perfect Daze, Panorama in Black and Victims of War.

Triangle

Triangle are three musicians who have been singing together on-and-off in the Felixstowe, Ipswich and Woodbridge areas of Suffolk since the mid-1980s and now specialise in a cappella harmony drawing on a variety of English traditions, both folk and formal.

  • What do we sing?

Traditional and self-penned songs, which always tell a story and usually concern beer, religion, politics or things that go bump in the night — in no particular order.

Walkway

Walkway’s mission is simple; to bring classic rock back to the UK.

Influenced by Van Halen, Whitesnake, Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith, Walkway have created a huge buzz in just three years. Walkway’s exhilarating pace has seen them tour extensively throughout East Anglia and beyond. They have been booked solidly throughout 2009, 10 and 11 – which included shows throughout the UK and Europe.

To date, Walkway have played in excess of 400 shows; averaging at 2 to 3 shows every week for the past three years. This has included pubs, clubs, parties, music competitions and festivals. They’re dedicated, in high demand, already booked for the next 12 months and highly sought after for festival appearances. Their headline appearance at The Waterfront, Norwich at the end of May gained rave reviews and had the phone ringing off the hook with booking demands.

Recordings so far have included a single and a 6 track EP, sold and promoted by the band themselves with characteristic enthusiasm. Also, following high demand from fans, a new EP has been recorded in July 2011.

FUTURE PLANS:  Walkway will continue to extensively play shows around the UK and Europe and also have an open invitation to play the legendary Whiskey A Go Go bar in Hollywood, where they are in talks to support a high profile artist. The trip to LA could also see Walkway play other shows within the LA music scene.
