Bawdsey Radar
The exhibition tells the story of a technology and an institution which helped win a war – and shape our future.
It reveals how scientists came together in total secrecy before World War 2 to prove that radio waves could locate aeroplanes, ships and other targets and how their invention dramatically affected the course of the conflict.
It explains how their work laid the foundations for the age of electronics and the computer.
The exhibition was designed by David Robertson, a communications professional specialising mainly in science and technology, as a touring exhibition for the Millennium celebrations in Malvern. It has also been on display at Bletchley Park and at the Fleet Air Arm Museum, Yeovilton.

Clifford Road Air Raid Shelter Museum
Hidden beneath a Suffolk school playground, among quiet residential streets, the shelter provides a vivid picture of life during World War Two.
The shelter was built in Ipswich during the first three months of the war, and was unusually robust compared to other public provisions. This was partly due to the efforts of the controversial local MP, Richard Stokes, who campaigned for massive public air-raid shelters to be built under Alexandra Park.
After the war, the shelter was sealed up and largely forgotten. It was re-discovered in 1989, when workmen excavating a small pond for the school found one of the original entrances. To everyone’s surprise the tunnels were in first class condition.
The Museum is usually open on various dates between Early April and End October. It is best to check their website for more specific information.

Helmingham Hall Gardens
It is hard to exaggerate the effect this beautiful park, with its red deer, spectacular moated Hall in mellow patterned red brick with its famous gardens will have on the visitor.
The whole combines to give an extraordinary impression of beauty and tranquillity. A classic parterre flanked by hybrid musk roses lies before a stunning walled kitchen garden with exquisite herbaceous borders and beds of vegetables interspersed by tunnels of sweet peas, runner beans and gourds.
On the other side lies a herd and knot garden behind which is a rose garden of unsurpassable beauty.
The colour combinations in all these are in immaculate taste and are both subtle and very beautiful.
The influence of the well-known garden designer Xa Tollemache, is clearly visible – the parterre was redesigned in 1987 and the new rose garden to east of the coach house was created in 1982, together with the knot and herb garden.

Ipswich Transport Museum
The Ipswich Transport Museum was founded in 1965 as the Ipswich Transport Preservation Group, and since that time a collection of over 85 vehicles has been built up to give a fleet of exhibits second to none in the country.
We have one of the widest ranges of commercial vehicle types in any Museum collection and this is even more remarkable when you consider that all our exhibits were used in or around the Ipswich area, with a significant proportion of them actually being built in the Town.
Until 1988 this fine collection was housed in a wide number of different storage places around Ipswich, ranging from sheds to barns and some in open storage areas. The frequent moves from one place to another, coupled with the problems of vandalism and weather damage has made their survival even more remarkable.
In 1988 the Museum was granted a licence to occupy two thirds of the former Priory Heath Trolleybus Depot, and this enabled the many exhibits to be gathered together under one roof for the first time in their lives.
Many of the exhibits on display have been carefully restored, whilst others await attention. Many are rare and are recognised as being of national as well as local importance.
Venue: Old Trolleybus Depot, Cobham Road, Ipswich, IP3 9JD
Please note that the Museum also holds special events throughout the season. Please check website for details.
Note: Wheelchair access is available to all parts of the Museum.

Landguard Fort
Built just outside Felixstowe, at the mouth of the River Orwell, Landguard Fort was designed to guard the entrance to Harwich. The first fortifications from 1540 were a few earthworks and blockhouse, but it was James I of England who ordered the construction of a square fort with bulwarks at each corner.
In 1667 the Dutch landed a force of 1500 men on Felixstowe beach and advanced on the fort, but were repulsed by Nathaniel Darrell and his garrison of 400 musketeers of the Duke of York & Albany’s Maritime Regiment (the first English Marines) and 100 artillerymen with 54 cannon. The fort was considered part of Essex in the 18th and 19th centuries; births and deaths within the garrison were recorded as ‘Landguard Fort, Essex’.
A new battery was built in 1716, and a complete new fort on an adjoining site was started in 1745 to a pentagonal bastioned trace. New batteries were built in the 1750s and 1780, but the biggest change was in the 1870s where the interior barracks were rebuilt to a keep-like design, the river frontage was rebuilt with a new casemated battery covered by a very unusual caponier with a quarter sphere bomb proof nose. Several open bastions were enclosed, and a mock ravelin block constructed to house a submarine mining contingent.
During the Second World War, it was used as one of the balloon launch sites of Operation Outward. This was a project to attack Germany by means of free-flying hydrogen balloons that carried incendiary devices or trailing steel wires (intended to damage power lines.) Between 1942 and 1944, many thousands of balloons were launched.
The Left Battery was converted into the Anti-aircraft Operations Room for Harwich in the 1950s.
Many visitors, as well as local people, have their own experiences of paranormal activity in or around the Fort. The most common being the image of a sailor looking out of the top right window (the side visible from the road). Most reportings were in the 1990s, but occasionally there are still reports of lights at night and being “pushed” whilst visiting the top floors.
The fort has been structurally consolidated and is now in the guardianship of English Heritage.
Venue: Landguard Fort, Viewpoint Road, Felixstowe, Suffolk, IP11 3TW

The Meare at Thorpeness
Visiting Thorpeness with your children is like going back in time to a land of fairy tales.
In 1910 the whole area flooded and this inspired the boating lake known as a ‘Meare’ since it is man made.
Around the 64 acre Meare is a mock Tudor village and a water tower known as ‘The House in the Clouds’ since the actual water tower is made to look like a house.
Thorpeness caters well for children of all ages with its vast beaches, play area, 1m deep boating lake and lakeside tearooms, which provide picnics and snacks.
The Meare itself has over 100 boats including rowing, kayaks, canoes, punts, dinghies and sailing boats, with many staff on hand to assist with stranded boats.
Children are encouraged to try out boating in this shallow lake where there are many islands and channels marked with names of the Peter Pan theme.
In August (23rd & 24th in 2012) the Thorpeness Regatta takes place and this is a great time to visit with children to see boat races and displays and a grand fireworks event in the evening. In the nearby town of Aldeburgh a carnival takes place at the same time: http://aldringham.onesuffolk.net/news-events-and-items-of-interest/events/thorpeness-regatta-and-fireworks-2/
