Aldeburgh Food and Drink Festival
FRIDAY 28th SEPTEMBER: Conference at Snape Maltings entitled Food Security for the Nation and for Suffolk. World population and demand for food is increasing, with more people now living in cities than in the countryside. This is taking place against a background of less water, less land, fewer mineral resources, increasing costs of production and distribution – and an uncertain climate. In this situation we have to find innovative solutions. Science must be part of it and so must local initiatives, such as food co-operatives, food distribution hubs, allotments, transition towns and food education. All will have a vital role. Speakers at the 2012 Food Security Conference will explain why we need both science and localism to ensure that we do not go hungry in the future.
SATURDAY 29th & SUNDAY 30th SEPTEMBER: A two day extravaganza at Snape Maltings, Snape, Nr. Saxmundham, Suffolk IP17 1SR. Saturday 10am – 5pm, Sunday 10am – 4pm. A great day out for all the family. Entrance fees apply which, in 2011 were £7 for visitors aged 13 and over on the gate, £6 if booked in advance. Ticket price includes a festival programme and cotton shopping bag. No fees for children aged 12 and under and also free parking! Dogs are welcome on site but must be kept on leads. We regret that with the exception of guide dogs, dogs are not permitted in the marquees.
A celebration of locally produced food and drink from here in East Suffolk – over 80 exhibitors offering tastings and explaining more about their businesses and where you can purchase their products all year round! Two demonstration stages with many celebrity visiting chefs as well as your favourite local chefs. Musical offerings from Aldeburgh Music and many hands on workshops. Keep watching the website for up to date information.
SATURDAY 29th – SUNDAY 14th OCTOBER: Festival Fringe over two weeks – over 75 events taking place throughout the region including behind the scenes tours, hands on experiences, events suitable for all the family. In 2011 local producers, farmers and restaurateurs organised progressive suppers throughout market towns with 3 courses at 3 different restaurants on one evening, cookery demonstrations, farm walks etc. etc. Book direct with the fringe hosts. More information will be uploaded from May onwards on the Festival website.

Middy in the War Years
Sunday 6th & Monday 7th May: 11.00am – 5.00pm both days.
Mid-Suffolk Light Railway Museum, Brockford Station, Wetheringsett, Suffolk IP14 5PW
Between 1904 and 1952, the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway served the rural communities between Haughley and Laxfield, but it was during WW2 that it became a vital part of the local war effort, carrying supplies for the two American bomber bases at Horham and Mendlesham. Men and materials were carried, and on occasion even bombs trundled along this quaint little rural line!
To celebrate this period of the railways history, the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway Museum at Wetheringsett will once again be holding its annual Middy in the War Years event over the early May bank holiday weekend. So feel free to dress up, and come along to join us for a weekend of fun, 40’s nostalgia and to relive a slice of local history with a few bangs along the way!
Visitors to Middy in the War Years will be able to enjoy:
- Rides on our Victorian era coaches pulled by steam locomotive
- A range of WWII era military vehicles including rides
- WWII era exhibitions including a wartime naval land observation post

Orwell Bluegrass Festival
Friday 11th – Sunday 13th May 2012
Hallow Tree Scout Camp, Ipswich IP10 0JP. Site will be open from Thursday 10th – Monday 14th May.
What started out as being a bit of indulgence for two old East Anglians who liked to hear bluegrass music without travelling to the four corners of the UK, has now become a structured and “organised” weekend. We love it, but never thought that we could become so focused on one thing, and still be enjoying ourselves.
The Hallow Tree venue is close to Ipswich and has loads of space. Hallow Trees Camp Ground has fantastic facilities, with several large halls alongside smaller rooms for workshops and our huge Concert tent which will seat 500.
This year we are hosting more concerts than ever and you can buy individual tickets for each gig but you will only get the full festival experience with a weekend ticket.
Ticket Prices are usually in the region of: All Weekend: Friday, Saturday and Sunday with Camping: £43 : Friday Night Ticket: £16: Saturday Day Ticket: £13 : Saturday Night Ticket: £15 : Saturday Day/Night: £26 : Sunday: £13
The site will be open from Thurs 12pm till Monday 12pm. If you arrive on Thursday (which we would recommend) we are charging £5.00 per person which is donated to the Scout Movement for their help with the Festival.

There will be lots of demonstrations including carving and sculpture, really fine designer craftsmen made furniture, musical instrument making, displays by traditional fletchers and bowyers, chain saw carving, hurdle making, wood turning, pole lathe turning, sign writing, as well as coracle making and wagon displays.
There will be a working mobile sawmill on site, so if you want to bring your own tree, it can be cut for you.
Workshops include activities such as archery, withy work, paper-making, pole lathe turning, weaving, scrap wood, tree bogletts, puppet making, jewellery making, den building, and Monkey-do tree climbing, and more.
Don’t worry about inclement weather as we have fine furniture and demonstrations in the barn and other activities in the grounds, housed in structures such as domes, tipis and yurts.

Woolpit Steam Rally
Saturday 26th & Sunday 27th May.
Warren Farm, Wetherden, Suffolk. IP14 3JX – off junction 47a A14 Eastbound
Woolpit Steam traces its roots back to the “Cotton Exhibition” which was held in the village of Cotton, Suffolk between 1975 and 1982, at which, many of the original Woolpit Steam committee had participated either as organisers, helpers, exhibitors or visitors. The first Woolpit Steam was held at Grange Farm, Woolpit in 1987, and in many ways captured the spirit of the small village rally of days gone by. By 1996, the show had outgrown its original site, and moved to Warren Farm, Wetherden.
We endeavour to stage a small friendly show but with a variety of exhibits that would be unusual even in larger events. By keeping the show to a manageable size, and through the generosity of the landowner and local businesses as well as the hard work of a dedicated team of volunteers, we manage to keep our costs low. We are thus able to make sizeable donations to local charities and organisations, which themselves make an important contribution to the local community.
